An Ethereal Hotel Sentinel Wedding Rooted in Wabi-Sabi Beauty
This The Sentinel Hotel wedding in Portland felt like stepping into an ethereal winter garden; lush greenery spilling through the ceremony space, soft ivory blooms nestled among layers of texture, and thoughtful moments that honored both seasonality and intention. Against Portland’s signature late-February grey skies, Hanh and Hank created a wedding day that felt verdant, whimsical, and quietly romantic.
A Moody Winter Day in Portland
February weddings in Oregon carry a kind of magic all their own.
Outside, the skies were moody and overcast in that familiar Portland way, while inside The Sentinel Hotel, warmth and calm filled the space. The historic architecture of the venue created such a beautiful contrast to the organic softness of the florals; ornate details, warm lighting, and an atmosphere that felt refined without ever feeling formal.
There was an unmistakable sense of support throughout the day, not only surrounding Hanh and Hank, but shared among the entire vendor team. It felt collaborative, joyful, and deeply rooted in care.
A Vision Rooted in Seasonality
From our very first conversation, I knew Hanh had a vision that felt deeply aligned with my own philosophy toward floral design.
Sustainability and supporting local growers were incredibly important to her, so she wanted florals that felt as seasonal and locally sourced as possible. Rather than forcing blooms that didn’t belong to late winter, we leaned into what the season naturally offered.
The palette centered around lush greenery, layered textures, soft ivory blooms, and small but impactful moments of vibrant blue woven throughout. The result felt verdant and immersive, with just enough unexpected color to bring the design to life. It was wabi-sabi in spirit; thoughtful, organic, and beautifully imperfect.
An Immersive Ceremony Space at The Sentinel Hotel
One of my favorite parts of this The Sentinel Hotel wedding was designing the ceremony installation.
I always love creating florals that feel immersive; the kind that shift the atmosphere of a room and invite guests into something larger than themselves. When budget and space allow, I love leaning into that feeling of abundance.
For Hanh and Hank’s ceremony, the fireplace mantel became the heart of the room. I wanted it to feel as though a lush garden had quietly taken root there, soft greenery cascading naturally across the historic architecture rather than feeling rigidly placed. Paired with verdant aisle arrangements, the ceremony space almost felt forest-like.
What I felt especially proud of was the texture throughout the greenery. Soft maidenhair fern mingled with sharper, more sculptural greens, creating movement and variation that made every arrangement feel alive.
Thoughtful Vintage Details
The couple also brought in small details that reflected their love of vintage elements.
One detail I especially adored was their wedding invitation suite, which featured a sweet photobooth series of the two of them. It felt nostalgic, playful, and deeply personal; the kind of detail that quietly tells your story before guests even arrive.
Those thoughtful touches paired beautifully with the floral vision, creating a wedding that felt refined, personal, and completely true to who they are.
A Meaningful Creative Connection
Hanh originally found Seedling Floral through Facebook, drawn to my use of texture and focus on locally sourced flowers. During our first conversations, she shared her vision, and I immediately felt inspired by it.
Sometimes there is just an instant understanding, and this was one of those weddings.
Knowing she felt seen and understood from the beginning made bringing this day to life feel especially meaningful.
After the wedding, Hanh shared words I’ll never forget:
“Thank you so much for making my vision comes to life 🤍💚 your skill, sensibility and creativity are just unmatched! I gasped when I saw the arrangements, big and small. Thank you thank you!!”
